Environmental Affairs Policy Committee

The Environmental Affairs Committee monitors current and proposed environmental legislation and regulations from the state and federal Environmental Protection Agency. The committee meets the third Tuesday of each month at the BIA office in Concord. Meetings begin at 8:00 AM and are open to BIA members.

Welcome & Introductions
 
Presentations
1. The Drought in New Hampshire and Impacts to Dam and Business Operations: Brandon Kernen and Jim Gallagher, NH Department of Environmental Services, will be joining the committee to provide an update on the drought conditions in New Hampshire. They will share what they have been hearing from businesses and how the record low water levels are impacting dam operation throughout the state. Madeleine Mineau, the new co-president of the Granite State Hydro Association will be joining us to discuss what impacts, if any, their membership is experiencing due to the lack of rain. Also joining us is Brian Maloy, Monadnock Paper Mills, who will provide specific examples of how the drought conditions are impacting his operations.
 
2. Hazardous Waste Rules Update: Wendy Bonner, NH Department of Environmental Services, will be joining the committee to provide a brief update on Hazardous Waste Rules (Env-Hw) which are expiring at the end of January 2017, including an insight of what differences we might expect in the revised rules and the timeline associated with rule making process.
 
Discussion
SB 38 NH Land Conservation Commission Recap - Tony Giunta, Nobis Engineering, Inc., who is the BIA representative on the NH Land Conservation Commission, will be joining us to provide a brief recap of the commissions recent meetings. Discussions will be geared towards settling on the committees position relative to developing a multi-year land conservation plan for the state of NH.
 
Other Business
Policy Committee Reconfiguration: BIA is combining its Environmental Affairs and Energy & Telecommunications Policy Committees. The new committee will be charged with deliberating over environmental compliance and energy challenges. Moving forward telecommunications issues will be addressed by BIA’s Economic Development Policy Committee. These changes will occur in January 2017.
